The Custo Barcelona show is a favorite at New York Fashion Week. And it was no surprise to see celebs like Adrienne Bailon, Miss Universe Paulina Vega, Miss USA Nia Sanchez and Denise Bidot sitting front row. We went backstage minutes before the show to speak with Custo Dalumu, co-creator of Custo Barcelona (brothers Custo and David started the label in the early '80s).
What was the inspiration for the fall.winter 2015 collection?
This collection is called 'Shake Before Use' and we are trying to create a contemporary language by mixing the classical world of black and white tartans with ethnic patterns. The looks throughout the collection feature a playful overlapping of long outerwear with short dresses and mini-skirts.
What are your favorites from the fall/winter 2015 women's collection?
The dresses and the woven textures and traditional plaids and ethnic prints are quite significant in the collection.
What is the Custo man wearing in fall/winter 2015?
The Custo man expresses himself in a classic language reminiscent of silent film. My favorites are the graphic suits and it's coats, sport coats and sweaters in a winter palette with other more daring colors.
The collections vary from season to season yet it is easy to identify a Custo Barcelona design, how do you do that?
We started this project 34 years ago and we are very respectful to our identity. Yet, we change everything every season in order to become the same in a new way. We do this by working, with a lot of enthusiasm.
Models love Custo Barcelona too! Wanessa, a Brazilian model at Wilhemina, told us her favorite thing about her show looks were the comfy boots she was going to walk down the runway in. We loved the feminie sillouettes in the dresses. The juxtapostion of short and long layers makes the collection feel classic yet progressive. The bold and bright colors in the clothes carried over to makeup in a seamless way. The makeup the look was a created by Gato for Maybelline and was a pretty clean look, save for the graphic orange eyeliner making the eyes the focus of the look. Duffy at Streeters London created a braided hairstyle and gave a cool girl look that was still playful and in sync with the Custo Barcelona look.
