We sat down with designer Mara Hoffman before her fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week where she debuted her Spring/Summer 2015 collection. We talked about the new fabrics she’s introducing this season, her crazy style as a teenager and about her son and his favorite Latin foods!

What was the inspiration for this collection?

We are calling this collection the ‘Sunrisers.’ It is sort of about that new day, bringing light and simply to be light. The hope of tomorrow. So I am trying to get across the idea of light and easy living. We’re trying to keep it a little bit lighter this season, a lighter palette. There are a lot of jumpsuits, wide legged; I am into them this season for sure.

We noticed it is a bit softer…

Yes, we are going for a softer approach, some fibers, gauzes and linens… keeping it close to home as part of my personal aesthetic this season.

Was choosing the design for the actual pieces difficult?

No, I think once we come up with the prints and the fabrics the silhouettes talk to me a bit. It is an easy way to plug it in.

When you were a teenager what was your style like?

Let me see, when I was a teenager I shifted a bit. I was really into Dee-Lite and raving. I looked like a crazy club kid slash hippie.

How do you think that has transformed over the years?

I think the hippie has definitely transferred. I think the club vibe is still there. I don’t know maybe it peeks out sometimes.

We see this rave culture coming around again, were you inspired by any of that?

No probably not. I am not having a rave-y moment.

How has it been raising a little one? We checked in with you last year about raising your son in a multi-cultural household. Has anything changed?

He is just amazing. He is more challenging; he is three, and a strong little dude. He is the best part of my life by far. My family is my everything so without them nothing is a thrill.

As he is growing into an adult is there any Latin food he likes to eat?

He is an animal, he eats arroz con pollo. My husband makes it a lot in the winter. In the colder months black beans and rice is a staple for him, sweet plantains. My husband is the cook, not me.
